Tunisia has imposed a nationwide overnight curfew on January 22nd as a result of the growing unrest in the country.
This curfew came as a result of the unemployment protest across the country which resulted into vandalism in several cities across the country.
The curfew will begin from 8 p.m. till 5 p.m.
According to the Interior Ministry, it said the attacks on public and private property “presents a danger to the country and its citizens.
The previous night, Jan 21, police stations came under attack and police officers used teargas to drive protesters who were armed with stones and Molotov cocktails.
Banks, storehouses and warehouses were not spared from the angry protesters as young people plundered and looted them.
An unemployed graduate in kesserine whose Mother was part of the protesters said “Are we not Tunisians too? It’s been four years I’ve been struggling. We’re not asking for much, but we’re fighting for our youth. We struggled so much for them,”
Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid was cutting short a visit to France to deal with the protests, which was triggered on Jan. 17 when a young man who lost out on a government job climbed a transmission tower in protest and was electrocuted. Tunisia’s unemployment stands around 15 percent, but is 30 percent among young people.
