Awori indigenes demand equal representation in Lagos LG polls

BALLOT-BOXTVC E, POLITICS – As residents and politicians warm up for the next local government elections in Lagos state, some indigenes of the state within the All Progressives Congress have sent out a Save-Our-Souls message to the party leadership.

Since December 2015, posters and banners bearing campaign messages have continued to appear in different parts of Lagos state, an indication that the government may soon announce a timeline for the next Local Government elections.

Political parties, groups and associations within the state have also been putting their houses in proper order for the purpose of making favourable impacts at the polls.

One of those groups is the Awori Indigenous Forum, an umbrella body for the natives of Awori-land across Lagos, and who are also members of the All Progressives Congress.

The forum is scared that Awori indigenes who may want to contest in the coming council polls may not be allowed to fly the flag of the APC in areas that are considered traditional Awori lands. They claim that has been the trend since 1999.

The group warned the leadership of the party against any act that could appear as if they take Awori indigenes for granted. For them, non-Awori persons cannot represent Aworiland better than Awori natives.

Last October, a Lagos High Court directed that the state government should hold fresh local government elections, declaring that the appointment of caretaker committees for council administration  is illegal and unconstitutional.

But the state government has since filed for a stay of execution of the judgement.
