A frustrated woman who had been childless after eight years of marriage has committed suicide in Anambra State.The 38-year-old woman identified as Lovina Odo took her life by hanging in a community in Anambra State following her inability to give her husband a child.
A journalist with Radio Sapientia 95.3 FM, Onitsha, Ifeanyi Orakwue, revealed that the deceased who was a petty trader, took her life on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, by hanging herself with a rope tied to a ceiling fan at her residence at 1, Ukpaka lane, Umusiome village, Nkpor-Agu near Onitsha.
The bereaved husband, Okechukwu Odo, a car washer, said he had gone out for business on the day of the incident and when he returned home from work around 6:30 pm, he met a crowd of sympathizers around his one-room apartment and knew someone was wrong.
“I left home for work that morning after taking my breakfast; she had asked that I buy a tuber of yam for dinner when I return.
When I returned, I saw people gathered around my apartment only to be told that my wife had killed herself.
We did not have any misunderstanding. Even though we had been married for eight years without a child, I did put pressure on her neither was I seriously disturbed. I don’t know why she killed herself.”
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ogidi Division, Hassan Musa, who confirmed the story, said the body of the deceased had been removed and deposited at the mortuary of Iyienu Mission Hospital.
“No suicide note was seen around her but preliminary investigation reveals that she might have committed suicide because she had no child,” the police officer said.
