Hip hop community stunned as rapper comes out as gay

TVC E. Makonnen Sheran, a US rapper formerly signed to Drake’s OVO label, has announced that he’s homosexual.

The artiste responsible for the hit single, Tuesday, came out of the closet on Friday through his Twitter account.

“And since y’all love breaking news, here’s some old news to break, I’m gay. And now I’ve told u about my life, maybe u can go life yours,” he wrote.

iLoveMakonnen, who was nominated for a Grammy, is popular in the Atlanta rap scene.

Rap music industry is generally viewed as homophobic which has thus far made it nearly impossible for queer rappers to publicly embrace their sexuality.

Le1f, born Khalif Diouf, a producer and rapper, is the only known figure in the hip-hop world to have come out as gay.

“The rap world thinks I’m gay. A lot of people out there do. They think I’m a homosexual, which is not a problem. I don’t want to say I’m gay, I’m straight, I’m bisexual or any of that, because that’s just… Who cares? All that’s doing is dividing us,” Makonen had told the New York Times in 2015.
