Monarch prohibited from seeing newborn until 90 days after birth

TVC E. The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has made mention of a tradition that prohibits him from seeing his newborn baby until 90 days after birth. He stated this while talking about the taboos that exist within his household despite the rise in modern civilization.

Akiolu mentioned this in an interview he had with news men on Saturday, November 26, 2016. He said, “There is nowhere there are no taboos, in Benin, Yoruba cultures. “For instance, in this house (palace), if a child is born to me today, I will not see him or her and he or she will not enter this house (palace) until 90 days.

“And there are some drinks and food anybody with royal blood in this palace must not put in his mouth.

“That is why the Yoruba adage says the practice in one household is an abomination in another household.” He however declined to explain why he is not allowed to see his child, as such information cannot be revealed to the public.
