Human Rights Watch accuses security officials of raping IDPs

Human Rights Watch has accused camp leaders, policemen and soldiers of raping and exploiting female refugees, living in the displaced persons camps in the North East.
The report indicted the Federal Government of not doing enough to protect affected women, or punish erring officials.

43 cases of rape in seven IDP camps in Maiduguri were documented by the group in late July.

The report says some of them were drugged and raped, while others were forced into sex through false marriage promises, and financial assistance.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered an investigation into the allegations.

A statement by Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu says the president has directed the inspector-general of police to investigate the issue.

He says the welfare of vulnerable citizens is the priority of Buhari’s  government.

But Mausi Segun says the decision to probe some of the allegations should be treated with caution.
