The Lagos state government has commenced the clean-up of the inland waterways with the inauguration of two water Hyacinth and debris removal machines.
This development is in fulfillment of a promise by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to transform the state waterways.
With this clean-up, there are hopes of a drastic drop in the rate if incessant accidents and engine problems caused by water hyacinth and debris.
Commissioner for the environment Babatunde Adejare said the purchase of the machines was in line with the strategic implementation of Lagos master-plan for the waterways.
The managing director of the Lagos waterways authority Abisola Kamson complained that the Hyacinth plants had affected the socio-economic activities of fishermen and inhabitants of riverine communities.
