Senate seeks to increase penalty for drug trafficking

A bill to increase the penalty and fine for drug trafficking in Nigeria has passed second reading in the Senate.
The amendment of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Bill seeks to review the sentences upward and fines are upgraded from twenty thousand naira to one hundred thousand naira for anyone that obstructs the arrest of traffickers when such persons are charged to court.

Sponsor of the bill, Senator Gbenga Ashafa also said the word heroin was misspelled as  “Heroine” which when subjected to debate in court does not refer to a hard drug.
