Ex-Speaker tasks Varsity dons on research, ideas

Stakeholders in the Nigerian education sector have been urged to come up with research and ideasthat can stimulate the growth of the country’s democracy.

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole made the appeal while delivering a lecture at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, on the role of tertiary institutions in the enhancement of sustainable development.

TVC News Ogun State Correspondent, Kazeem Olowe reports that the former Speaker observed that lack of quality participation and supports with research works by scholars and students in the nation’s tertiary institutions are parts of the problems impeding the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

Bankole noted that universities across the world serve as pool of knowledge and ideas and wants Nigerian universities to live up to expectation.

He also identified frequent changes of lawmakers from Councillors to  Senators as  contributing to collapse of political institutions in the country.

He noted that more than 80 percent of the legislators trained at great expense by the county get dumped after four years and the country often retrains another set of lawmakers for the next four years.
