Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna has officially returned two properties to the family of the late Sani Abacha, after they were revoked under former governor Nasir el-Rufai’s administration in 2022. The properties include a 2,284-square-meter land at No. 9 Abakpa GRA and a 3,705-square-meter land at No. 1 Degel Road, Ungwan Rimi GRA, both covered by Kaduna state certificates of occupancy. The lands were originally revoked by el-Rufai in April 2022, with an official newspaper advertisement citing various contraventions.
Reuben Atabo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and lawyer to the Abacha family, filed legal suits challenging the revocation, citing damage to the family’s reputation. In response, the current administration under Governor Uba Sani has reinstated the titles of the lands, though subject to the settlement of outstanding fees. This move marks a significant shift in the state’s handling of the Abacha family’s assets and has sparked discussions on legal and political matters surrounding land ownership and family rights in Kaduna.
