Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72.
She reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing following her performance at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
An eyewitness at the event confirmed the tragic news, stating, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but unfortunately could not be saved.”
Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as “The Elegant Stallion,” was not only a celebrated musician but also a politician and human rights activist. She previously served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013.
Onwenu is best remembered for her numerous hit songs, including “Wait for Me,” which she performed alongside Juju maestro King Sunny Ade. As of now, her family has not issued an official statement regarding her passing.
