During his opening address at the ‘Advancing Africa: Unleashing the Power of Youth in Science and Innovation’ event in Lagos State, Bill Gates, the co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shared a conversation he had with his daughter, Phoebe, before his visit to Nigeria.
Gates revealed that Phoebe told him he would be fortunate to witness performances by popular Nigerian Afrobeats artists, Burna Boy and Rema, during his stay in Nigeria. He acknowledged the global popularity of Afrobeats music from Nigeria.
He stated, “Being here in Nigeria, I can’t help but acknowledge the incredible creativity that thrives here. Afrobeats from Nigeria has gained popularity worldwide. When my daughter Phoebe heard I was coming to Nigeria, she said, ‘You’re lucky to go see Burna Boy and Rema.’”
Gates also reminisced about his previous visit to the country, where he had the opportunity to witness performances by Davido and Wizkid, two prominent Nigerian artists. He expressed admiration for their talents and mentioned that his children perceive Nigeria as a vibrant and trendy destination.
