A hyena that had escaped from the Jos Wildlife Park in central Nigeria has been captured and returned to its enclosure.
The hyena, which had been inside a cage, caused panic among residents in the area. Drones and rangers were deployed to search for the animal.
The Management of the Plateau State Tourism Corporation confirmed that the hyena had been found, tranquilized, captured, and safely returned to its enclosure.
Wildlife experts, including Abba Gandu from Kano Zoo, emphasized that hyenas are naturally fearful of humans and are more likely to run away than attack.
Wildlife escapes are not uncommon in Nigeria. In 2015, a four-year-old lion was shot dead after escaping from the same park. In 2019, a lion also escaped from a cage in Kano state during a national agricultural show.
