Tottenham Forward Son Heung-min Forgives Bentancur for Insensitive Remark
Tottenham Hotspur’s forward Son Heung-min, 31, has graciously accepted an apology from his teammate Rodrigo Bentancur, 26, following an inappropriate comment Bentancur made about South Koreans during a television interview.
The incident occurred during the Uruguayan TV show “Por La Camiseta” where host Rafa Cotelo asked Bentancur for a Tottenham player’s shirt. Bentancur responded, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
Bentancur issued an apology last week for his comment.
“I’ve spoken with Lolo (Bentancur),” Son, the captain of South Korea’s national team, shared on Instagram. “He made a mistake, recognized it, and has apologized. Lolo would never intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.”
Son emphasized their unity and focus on the upcoming season, saying, “We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”
In response to the incident, Tottenham released a statement on Thursday affirming their commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion. The club announced plans to provide further education to all players to align with these values.
“We fully support our captain Sonny’s decision to move on from this incident, allowing the team to concentrate on the new season ahead,” the statement concluded.
Following a comment from Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology, the Club has been providing assistance in ensuring a positive outcome on the matter.
