The international box office performance of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” has faced challenges, earning $33.3 million from 75 territories and a total of $58.9 million worldwide during its opening weekend, falling short of its $168 million production budget.
“Furiosa” vs. “The Garfield Movie” in the Domestic Market
In the domestic market, Warner Bros.’ prequel “Furiosa” is in a close battle with Sony’s animated film, “The Garfield Movie,” with both movies grossing approximately $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million over the Memorial Day weekend, marking one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades for box office performance.
Struggling to Match the Success of “Mad Max: Fury Road”
“Furiosa” is struggling to match the success of its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which amassed $380 million against a similar budget. Although the R-rated prequel has received positive reviews, it has not achieved the same level of acclaim as “Fury Road” and has primarily appealed to its core fanbase of older male moviegoers.
International Performance: Strongest Markets for “Furiosa” and “The Garfield Movie”
Internationally, “Furiosa” performed strongest in Korea, earning $4.5 million, followed by France with $2.6 million, the United Kingdom with $2.5 million, Mexico with $2.4 million, and Australia with $2.2 million. Imax screens contributed $9.5 million to the global box office sales, including $4.7 million from international markets.
On the other hand, “The Garfield Movie” has been steadily gaining momentum in worldwide ticket sales, reaching $91.1 million in total. Starring Chris Pratt as the iconic orange cat, the movie was significantly less expensive to produce than “Furiosa,” with a budget of $60 million. It secured the third spot on the international weekend charts, earning $14 million from 51 overseas markets.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and “IF” in the International Market
Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” claimed the second position on the international charts, earning $20.6 million from 52 markets. In North America, the fourth installment of the “Apes” reboot franchise garnered $17.1 million over the four-day weekend, accumulating a total of $172 million internationally and $294.8 million globally so far.
Paramount’s fantasy-comedy “IF,” directed by John Krasinski and starring Ryan Reynolds, followed in fourth place on the international charts with $11.3 million from 64 territories. The family-friendly film earned approximately $21 million domestically over the four-day holiday weekend, bringing its global total to $103.6 million.
