Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos (34) has announced his decision to retire from football after the European Championships with Germany this summer.
Speculation about Kroos’ future has been mounting in recent months with his contract set to expire in June. The German international has now confirmed his intention to end his career.
“July 17th, 2014 – the day I was introduced at Real Madrid, the day that changed my life. It marked the beginning of a new chapter at the world’s biggest club,” Kroos said in a statement.
“After 10 years, this chapter concludes at the end of the season. I will always cherish those incredibly successful years. I want to thank everyone who welcomed me warmly and trusted me, especially you, dear Madridistas, for your affection and love from day one until the end.
“This decision also means that my career as an active footballer will conclude this summer after the Euro championship.
“I am happy and proud that I found the right moment to make this decision on my own terms. My goal was always to retire at the peak of my performance. Now, my focus is solely on winning our 15th Champions League title! HALA MADRID Y NADA MAS!”
Kroos’ final match for Real Madrid will be the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium. He will also conclude his international career with Germany at the European Championships on home soil.
Throughout his illustrious career, Kroos has won one World Cup, five Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, and three Bundesliga titles.
