The 2024 BET Awards nominations were unveiled on Thursday, May 16, spotlighting several Nigerian artists including Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Tems. The awards ceremony, celebrated as “Culture’s Biggest Night,” will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, 2024.
Burna Boy, renowned as the African Giant, earned nominations in two prominent categories: Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. He will compete against top artists like Drake, Usher, Chris Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Gunna.
Tems also garnered two significant nominations, being recognized for Best Video Director and Best Gospel/Inspirational Song Award for “Me & U.”
Ayra Starr, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, had an outstanding year, securing three nominations: Best New Artist, Best African Act, and Best HER for her single “Commas,” leading her Nigerian contemporaries in nominations.
In addition, Davido and Lojay are contenders for the Viewer’s Choice Award for their collaboration on Chris Brown’s “Sensational.” Asake is nominated for Best International Act, while Seyi Vibez is up for Viewer’s Choice Best International New Act.
On the international front, American rapper Drake leads with seven nominations, followed by Nicki Minaj with six. J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, and Victoria Monét each received five nominations. 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla, and Usher each have four nominations.
