Apple Adds iPhone Alerts for Third-Party Bluetooth Trackers with iOS 17.5

With iOS 17.5, Apple introduced alerts for unauthorized Bluetooth trackers, even those not made by Apple. This update, developed with Google, addresses Bluetooth tracking safety risks.

The new Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers (DULT) standard allows iOS and Android devices to detect and alert users of unknown trackers traveling with them. Apple announced that iOS 17.5 includes these alerts, and Google confirmed support for Android devices running version 6.0 or higher. iPhone users will receive an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert if an unknown tracker moves with them, enabling them to identify, locate, and disable the tracker.

Apple initially launched AirTags without alerts for Android users, later addressing this with an Android app. Google began implementing AirTag tracking alerts in July 2023. With Google’s enhanced Find My Device network, the potential for unwanted tracking by third-party devices has increased. Google delayed adding Bluetooth tracker support until Apple implemented DULT. With Apple’s update, many new Bluetooth trackers are expected soon.

Chipolo and Pebblebee have already announced tags supporting this standard. Devices from Motorola, Jio, and Eufy are anticipated soon. Samsung and Tile, which supports its own Find with Life360 network, have also committed to the new specification.
