Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are reportedly aiming to commence filming for the fourth Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” film in late September. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, if all goes smoothly, audiences could expect to see the new Spidey swinging into theaters by late 2025. This four-year gap between “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the upcoming installment marks the lengthiest break between Spider-Man films since the transition from Maguire to Garfield.
However, the production faces a major hurdle as it currently lacks a director. Richtman emphasizes that while no filmmaker is officially attached yet, an offer has been extended to a potential candidate. Previous rumors have linked directors like Drew Goddard and Justin Lin to the project, but their recent commitments to other endeavors, such as a “The Matrix” reboot and the thriller “Stakehorse,” respectively, have complicated matters.
While both Marvel and Sony are pushing for a September start date, certain critical details remain unresolved. One key point of contention has been the script, with Marvel favoring a ‘street-level’ narrative while Sony leans toward another expansive multiverse adventure. The directorial position also remains up in the air, with both Lin and Goddard ruled out due to their other commitments. Despite these challenges, longtime Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal expressed her hopes for this film to kick off a new trilogy in collaboration with Marvel.
