Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to Visit Nigeria

Meghan Markle’s recent revelation about her Nigerian heritage on her Archetypes podcast in October 2022 stirred global interest, disclosing a striking 43% Nigerian lineage from an ancestry test result. Now, the excitement mounts as the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirms their imminent visit to Nigeria in May, closely linked to the Invictus Games championed by Prince Harry.

A statement from Brigadier Tukur Gusau, the Nigerian military’s Director of Defence Information, published in the Daily Times, sheds light on the royal couple’s itinerary. They are set to engage with service members and immerse themselves in a variety of cultural activities during their stay. The focal point of their visit is to enhance Nigeria’s involvement in the Invictus Games and explore the possibility of Nigeria hosting this prestigious event in the future.

Meghan’s podcast revelation resonated deeply, particularly among Nigerian women, sparking a wave of interest and connection. Prince Harry, in anticipation of the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf last September, hinted at Meghan’s steadfast support for Nigeria, infusing a lively competitive spirit into the atmosphere.

While specific details regarding dates and locations remain undisclosed, there is speculation that their visit might coincide with Harry’s participation in the Thanksgiving Service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Nigeria, a cherished member of the Commonwealth since gaining independence in 1960, holds a special place in the hearts of the royal family. Princess Alexandra’s presence at Nigeria’s independence ceremony in Lagos, representing Queen Elizabeth, symbolized the enduring bond between the nations. King Charles, the current head of the Commonwealth, further strengthens this relationship, leading a consortium of 56 nations, showcasing the lasting legacy of British influence. The royal visit to Nigeria by Charles and Camilla in 2018 underscored the significance of this historic alliance.
