Harvey Weinstein, the former movie mogul, has been hospitalized in New York City for a series of medical tests following his return from upstate prison. This move comes after an appeals court overturned his 2020 rape conviction.
Attorney Arthur Aidala reported that Weinstein was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for evaluation upon his arrival in the city on Friday. Aidala noted that Weinstein’s health is concerning, stating, “He’s a train wreck health-wise” and that Weinstein is undergoing a variety of tests.
Weinstein’s initial conviction stemmed from allegations of sexual assault and rape brought forward by former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and former actress Jessica Mann. The original trial was pivotal in the #MeToo movement, as numerous other accusers also came forward with allegations of sexual assault.
Weinstein had been housed at the Mohawk Correctional Facility, approximately 100 miles northwest of Albany, before being transported to New York City. The appeals court ruling vacated his conviction and 23-year sentence, ordering a retrial. Despite this, Weinstein remains in custody due to a separate rape conviction in Los Angeles in 2022, for which he received a 16-year sentence.
Weinstein’s medical history includes various ailments such as cardiac issues, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems. Aidala described Weinstein as mentally sharp but facing significant physical health challenges. The lawyer expressed concerns about Weinstein’s treatment during his transport, including a lack of food and water.
Weinstein’s legal team plans to meet with him on Monday and will request that his retrial be scheduled after Labor Day. Meanwhile, Weinstein remains under medical care at Bellevue Hospital.
