Truecaller Unveils Web Client for Android Users, Expanding Desktop Features

Truecaller has introduced a web version of its caller ID app, offering Android users access to features like SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number lookup on desktop. Named Truecaller for Web, the initial rollout is for Android users globally, with plans to extend support to iOS later on.

Android users can now link their devices to the web client via a QR code, allowing for one active web session at a time. Truecaller automatically signs out users after 30 days of inactivity, and manual unlinking from browser settings is also an option. This mirrors the setup of messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram.

Despite India being its largest market with nearly 259 million users, Truecaller’s SMS and chat-mirroring feature arrives relatively late. However, it offers convenience for quick responses or accessing OTPs for login, similar to Microsoft’s SMS mirroring for Android and iPhone users on Windows.

Additionally, users can now look up phone numbers without rate limitations on the web client, along with real-time caller ID notifications for incoming calls. Truecaller noted that 80 million users receive SMS pop-up notifications daily, though it’s unclear if they use Truecaller as their primary SMS client.

In recent months, Truecaller has focused on AI-powered features, such as the “Max” update to block calls from unapproved contacts or spam. Call recording and AI-powered transcription were also introduced, initially in the U.S. and later in India.

While the company faced a 32% stock dip in October 2023 after reporting lower revenues, it has since recovered, currently trading around SEK31.68 ($3).

Update: Truecaller clarified that the feature rollout is global, not limited to India.
