Apple’s Game-Changing Move: Retro Emulators Welcome on App Store!

In a significant policy shift, Apple now allows retro game emulators on its App Store, enabling developers to offer downloadable games alongside them. This update, noted by 9to5Mac, expands the platform’s guidelines to embrace retro gaming console emulator apps. Developers have received confirmation from Apple via email that they can create and distribute emulators on the marketplace.

Previously, emulator software was prohibited on the App Store, prompting developers to explore alternative distribution methods for iOS users, such as jailbreaking or sideloading tools. However, with this rule revision, users may no longer need to resort to such measures, potentially opening the door to more Android emulators on iOS devices.

Apple emphasizes that developers are accountable for ensuring that their software complies with guidelines and laws, including avoiding pirated content. While the allowance of emulators does not extend to pirated games, enthusiasts eagerly await official releases from console manufacturers. These changes align with Apple‘s response to regulatory pressures, notably the EU’s Digital Markets Act, aimed at promoting fair competition among tech giants.
