YouTube is testing with an AI feature to skip to the best parts of a video

YouTube is experimenting with a new feature called Jump Ahead, designed to fast-forward users to the most engaging parts of a video. This feature, currently available for YouTube Premium users, aims to eliminate dull content segments.

Jump Ahead works in tandem with the existing double-tap feature on the YouTube app for Android or iOS. By double-tapping, users can advance the video in 10-second intervals until they find the desired section.Utilizing machine learning algorithms and user watch data, Jump Ahead identifies potential highlights in a video and prompts users with an onscreen button to skip to those segments.

Creators can also benefit from Jump Ahead when watching their own content, regardless of their YouTube Premium subscription status. Currently, this feature is being tested with a limited group of YouTube Premium subscribers in the U.S., with no specific timeline for wider release.

Previously, YouTube introduced a similar feature displaying the most replayed parts of a video through a progress bar graph, initially exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers. If successful, Jump Ahead could potentially become available to all users in the future. YouTube has a history of testing and refining features, such as the option to watch videos at double speed, which was temporarily removed before being reinstated last year.
