The Super Eagles suffered a 0-2 defeat to Mali in an international friendly match held at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco on Wednesday, March 27. Despite their 2-1 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana on Friday, March 22, the Super Eagles struggled to replicate their tactical prowess against Mali due to defensive errors.
Nigeria’s interim coach, Findi George, made four changes to the team that faced Ghana, introducing Kenneth Omeruo, Jamilu Collins, Raphael Onyedika, and Moses Simon, while Benjamin Tianimu, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Cyriel Dessers were benched. Frank Onyeka was sidelined due to injury.
Mali took the lead just 18 minutes into the game with El Bilal Toure scoring from close range after a defensive lapse from Chidozie Awaziem. To adjust tactics, Nigeria’s interim coach substituted Moses Simon for Cyriel Dessers, who had scored a first-half penalty against Ghana.
Despite the change, Mali maintained control, frustrating the Super Eagles’ attacks and holding a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, both teams started slowly, but Nigeria increased the tempo, creating several chances from corner kicks in search of an equalizer.
However, their efforts were in vain as Dessers missed a crucial opportunity in the 65th minute, and Mali’s goalkeeper, Mamadou Samassa, thwarted Kelechi Iheanacho’s long-range attempt shortly after. In the 87th minute, Mali extended their lead with Kamory Doumbia scoring from inside the box, securing a 2-0 victory over Nigeria.
