Numerous high-profile players, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Victor Osimhen, have withdrawn from upcoming international friendlies with their respective national teams. Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been particularly affected, with three key players missing out on fixtures against Mali and Ghana. Here’s a rundown of the players who won’t be participating and the reasons behind their absence.

Victor Osimhen‘s absence from Nigeria’s friendlies is attributed to an ongoing injury concern. Despite being deemed fit by Napoli’s caretaker manager, Francesco Calzona, Osimhen is grappling with inflammation from a previous injury, necessitating further recovery time. Consequently, he’s excluded from Napoli’s international duty roster, with the forward expected to continue rehabilitation for at least two weeks.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from Portugal’s first friendly against Sweden is a tactical decision by the head coach, unrelated to any injury. However, he’s anticipated to feature in the subsequent game.

Additionally, Nigeria’s interim coach, George Finidi, faces further setbacks as Premier League stars Gabriel Osho and Taiwo Awoniyi will miss out due to injuries. Osho, nursing a knee injury sustained during Luton Town FC’s match, was unable to obtain medical clearance to join the Nigerian squad. Similarly, Awoniyi’s recurring injury concerns sideline him for the friendlies, marking his second consecutive absence from national team duties following his non-participation in AFCON 2023.
