Apple Explores Google Partnership for AI Features on iPhones

Reportedly, Apple is considering a collaboration with Google to incorporate Gemini-powered features into iPhones. This potential partnership would give Google a significant edge, as it already serves as the default search engine for Apple’s Safari browser on iPhones.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Apple is in discussions to license Google’s AI technology for the integration of AI-powered features in future iOS updates. Additionally, Apple has also explored the possibility of utilizing GPT models from OpenAI.

With increasing competition in the AI sector from companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, and Google, Apple faces mounting pressure to enhance its AI capabilities. Apple CEO Tim Cook previously mentioned plans to introduce GenAI features later this year.

Despite indications from Apple’s job postings suggesting internal and external tools powered by generative AI, the company’s progress in its own AI endeavors seems slower than anticipated. While Apple’s own models may contribute to on-device features in the upcoming iOS 18 update, discussions with external providers indicate a strategic move towards leveraging third-party AI technology for tasks such as image creation and text assistance.

However, Google has encountered challenges with its Gemini AI model, including issues with historical inaccuracies in generated images, leading to a temporary pause in its image-generation feature. Despite setbacks, Google remains ahead in launching smartphone-related features, having partnered with Samsung to introduce Gemini-powered AI features on the Galaxy S24 series and incorporating these features into its Pixel series.
