Manager Roberto D’Aversa Sacked by Lecce Following Headbutting Incident

Lecce has taken the decision to part ways with manager Roberto D’Aversa (48) following an incident where he headbutted an opposing player during their recent match against Hellas Verona. The Serie A club announced the termination of D’Aversa’s contract on Monday in response to the altercation that occurred at the conclusion of their 1-0 home loss to Verona on Sunday.

In a statement released after the match, Lecce condemned the behavior exhibited by D’Aversa, leading to his dismissal. The club expressed its commitment to upholding standards of professionalism and sportsmanship.

The incident resulted in D’Aversa receiving a red card along with Verona striker Thomas Henry. Following the match, D’Aversa, who took charge of Lecce in June 2023, issued an apology, attributing his actions to provocation directed at his players during the closing stages of the game.

Lecce’s performance in the league this season has been underwhelming, with only five wins in 28 matches, placing them 15th in the standings with 25 points. Verona’s victory in the encounter propelled them to 13th place with 26 points, surpassing Lecce in the rankings.
