Marathon World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum Dies in Tragic Car Crash

Kelvin Kiptum, renowned for holding the men’s marathon world record, tragically passed away in a car accident in his native Kenya, as confirmed by World Athletics. At just 24 years old, Kiptum’s remarkable talent stunned the running community when he achieved a historic time of 2 hours and 35 seconds at the Chicago Marathon last year. This groundbreaking feat not only secured his place in marathon history but also earned him recognition from World Athletics, who recently ratified his exceptional achievement.

Tragically, Kiptum lost his life alongside his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, in the fatal crash. Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging Kiptum’s incredible legacy in the sport.

Kiptum’s unparalleled success in the marathon arena included surpassing Eliud Kipchoge’s previous record and setting his sights on further milestones, including attempting to break the two-hour barrier during the Rotterdam Marathon in April. Additionally, he was a frontrunner for the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
