In a strategic move to recover a portion of the substantial fees invested in the signings of Jadon Sancho and Antony, Manchester United has extended offers to Saudi Pro League clubs. The Red Devils spent a combined total of £155 million (£197m) on these two wingers, but the outcomes of both transfers have fallen short of expectations.
Following a series of setbacks, including Sancho’s temporary loan to Borussia Dortmund due to a training dispute with coach Erik ten Hag, and Antony’s lack of significant contributions in 22 appearances this season, United is now seeking to offload the English and Brazilian talents. The aim is to secure the highest possible fees to fuel further investments.
According to reports, Manchester United has initiated discussions with affluent Saudi Arabian clubs, hoping to find suitors for Sancho and Antony. Despite significant expenditures on European stars by these clubs in the previous summer, budget constraints are anticipated in the January transfer window. However, United remains optimistic about fetching £50 million ($64m) for each winger during the upcoming summer transfer window.
While the Saudi clubs are reportedly eyeing marquee signings, including Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, and Son Heung-min, United’s Casemiro and Raphael Varane have also been linked. Although there were indications of a potential January move to Al-Ettifaq for Sancho, negotiations hit a roadblock as Steven Gerrard’s team refused to include a £50 million obligation to buy as part of the deal.
With hopes that Sancho regains top form in Germany and attracts interest, and Ten Hag’s aspirations to reignite Antony’s performance for the remainder of the season, Manchester United is navigating a strategic course to optimize its squad and financial standing.
