In a commanding display, Jannik Sinner led Italy to victory over Australia in the Davis Cup final, securing their first title in 47 years. The opening singles match saw Matteo Arnaldi overcome Alexei Popyrin in a tense encounter, putting Italy ahead 1-0 in Malaga, Spain.

Sinner, in exceptional form, continued his stellar week with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Alex de Minaur, sealing the historic Davis Cup triumph for Italy. Celebrating the victory, Sinner expressed, “It has been an incredible feeling for all of us; obviously, we are really happy.”

This marks Italy’s second Davis Cup win, the previous one dating back to 1976. Scenes of jubilation unfolded as the Italian team joined Sinner on the court to celebrate their victory, with Australia experiencing their second consecutive Davis Cup final defeat, having lost to Canada the previous year.

Reflecting on Italy’s journey to the final, Sinner remarked, “We kept everything together. Yesterday, we were one point from being out, and now we can celebrate the win. I think we can all be very, very happy.”

Sinner’s dominance was evident early in the final against De Minaur, breaking in the third game and securing the first set with a second set point. The Italian’s relentless performance continued in the second set, leaving De Minaur with no chance of a comeback. Sinner faced only one break point throughout the match, converting five of his own 10 opportunities.

Arnaldi’s contribution in the opening singles match was crucial, providing Italy with a dream start. Despite a tense first set, Arnaldi capitalized on Popyrin’s missed opportunities, ultimately securing victory in a thrilling decider.
