Super Eagles Maintain 40th Place in Latest FIFA World Rankings

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have held firm in the 40th position according to the most recent world football rankings unveiled by the Fédération of Internationale Football Association (FIFA) on October 26, 2023.

The top ten positions remain unchanged, exclusively occupied by European and South American teams. Argentina, the victors of the FIFA 2022 World Cup, retain the top spot, followed by France in second place and Brazil in third. The Three Lions of England occupy the fourth spot, with Belgium rounding out the top five.

Nigeria had previously slipped from 39th to 40th in the preceding FIFA world ranking published on September 21, despite a convincing 6-0 victory over São Tomé and Principe in their final 2023 AFCON qualifier.

In the latest world ranking, the Super Eagles maintained their position, as per the FIFA website, following a 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia and a 3-2 win over Mozambique during the last international break.

Within the African context, the Super Eagles’ position remains unchanged, as they continue to hold the sixth spot. Morocco, the semi-finalists of the FIFA 2022 World Cup, lead the rankings in Africa, followed by the African Cup of Nations champions, Senegal. Tunisia secures third place, with Algeria in fourth and Egypt holding the fifth position on the continent.

Lesotho, one of the Super Eagles’ Group C opponents in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, has seen a dip in the rankings from 151 to 153. In the same group, South Africa has dropped from 63 to 64, while Zimbabwe has retained the 125th position.

FIFA is set to release the next FIFA/Coca-Cola world ranking on November 30, 2023.
