Meek Mill’s Musical Journey

On September 12, 2023, the public mourned the loss of Nigerian Street Hop star Mohbad, whose music touched people from all walks of life. American rapper Meek Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams on May 6, 1987, joined other US Hip Hop icons like Kodak Black and Lil Durk in paying tribute to the late Nigerian artist.

Meek Mill’s Early Career

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Meek Mill started his musical journey as a battle rapper. He was a part of the short-lived rap group, The Bloodhoundz. In 2008, his talent caught the eye of Atlanta-based rapper T.I., who signed him to his first record deal. By February 2011, after leaving Grand Hustle Records, Meek Mill signed with Miami-based rapper Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group (MMG). Under MMG and Warner Bros. Records, he released his debut album, “Dreams and Nightmares,” in 2012. The album, featuring the hit single “Amen” with Drake, reached number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

Dream Chasers Records: Meek Mill’s Imprint

In October 2012, Meek Mill launched his own label imprint, Dream Chasers Records, named after his mixtape series. He gained fame with contributions to MMG’s “Self Made” compilation and hit singles like “Tupac Back” and “Ima Boss,” both featuring Rick Ross. His subsequent albums, “Dreams Worth More Than Money” (2015), “Wins & Losses” (2016), and “Championships” (2018), made significant impacts. “Championships” debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart and featured the chart-topping single “Going Bad” with Drake, marking Meek Mill’s highest-charting single to date. His fifth album, “Expensive Pain,” was released on October 1, 2021, further solidifying his place in the hip-hop pantheon.
