Harry Maguire confirms Manchester United captaincy change

Following discussions with manager Erik ten Hag, Harry Maguire confirmed that he will no longer captain Manchester United. Reports earlier this month indicated that Ten Hag was considering removing Maguire from the role due to his limited appearances under the Dutchman’s leadership last season. Maguire started only eight Premier League matches, leading to ongoing speculation about his future at Old Trafford…

Maguire took to Twitter to state, “The manager informed me of his decision to change the captaincy during our discussion today. He explained his reasons, and although I’m personally very disappointed, I will continue to give my utmost effort whenever I wear the Manchester United shirt.”

Expressing gratitude to the club’s fans, Maguire said, “I want to extend a huge thank you to the Manchester United supporters for their incredible support throughout my time as captain. Leading Manchester United for the past three and a half years has been an immense privilege and one of the proudest moments of my career so far.”

Maguire acknowledged the prestigious nature of being the club captain and affirmed his dedication to helping United achieve success. He expressed appreciation to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for initially entrusting him with the responsibility and extended well wishes to the individual who will assume the role, assuring them of his full support.

Bruno Fernandes often served as captain in Maguire’s absence last season, and it is expected that the Portuguese midfielder will be given the permanent captaincy. Manchester United stated that the new captain will be announced in due course, after informing the players.

Since joining United from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, Maguire has made over 170 appearances for the club. Recent reports have linked him with a potential move to West Ham.
