YV Ladies Blow Hot As Emefiele Insists On Jan 31st Deadline For Old Naira Notes

Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has declared that the CBN will not postpone the deadline for the old naira notes, which is January 31.

Speaking at the post-Monetary Policy Committee briefing of the bank in Abuja on Tuesday, Emefiele said, “I don’t have good news for those who want the deadline of the old naira to be changed because we will not move it.

“People are holding and vaulting the naira in their houses and they don’t have the license to do that, because they use it to speculate on the naira.”

According to him, the apex bank has collected about N1.5 trillion so far, with the goal of reaching N2 trillion by the deadline.

He said: “We have pleaded with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) not to harass anybody, and on my honour, they will not do that.”Emefiele also said the total stamp duty collected by the bank in seven years accrued to N370.7 billion, not N89trillion as alleged by some groups.

Remember how Mr Muhammed Kazaure, a member of the House of Representatives, raised an alarm about the theft of stamp duty proceeds totalling N89 trillion?

He insisted that the bank only remits 60% of stamp duty money to the government and that the remaining 40% goes to private pockets while alleging that the apex bank has not submitted stamp duty earnings to government coffers as tax.

But Emefiele said, “The total banking sector assets today is N71 trillion. The total bank deposit is N44.418trillion.so it is not possible for stamp duty alone to clock more than the total bank assets and deposit.”

He said the amount so far disbursed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the federation account is N226.4Bn, leaving a balance of N144.2Bn.
