On today’s show, we had the Police Public Relations Office, Olumuyiwa Adejobi who discussed with the ladies of #yourviewtvc, the State Of Security in Nigeria.
He also gave some reasons as to why certain personalities go out with police escorts despite the cry for more workforce
Adejobi noted that elections must be peaceful to produce good governance for which Nigerians yearned.
He had late last year called on Nigerians to shun hooliganism, thuggery, vandalism and acts that could affect the free, fair and credible election processes.
“We all want to have free, fair and acceptable elections in 2023 and we need to work toward it; politicians must campaign peacefully and carry security agencies along in their campaigns.
“We are not saying you should take permission from us.
“However, politicians need to carry security agencies along for the latter to help to manage their timetables so that there will not be clashes during rallies,’’ he advised politicians and their supporters.
He said the plan would be forwarded to the relevant authority for implementation to assist the Inspector-General of Police and his management team to reposition the police.
Giving an insight into the trial of the murder of female lawyer, Raheem Bolanle the police PRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi said, “the case in court and the Lagos State Government is in charge and we need to leave the case for the court to decide whatever it is as it is not good for us to be judgemental or discussing an issue of sort nature”
What happens if a police officer is found guilty in such a case?
The law is there as well as the criminal justice system and it is clear enough. We have criminal laws and the criminal procedure act that will guide the procedure into persecution.
When a criminal case is committed and if it’s a security serving person in the land, he or she can’t be arraigned. It’s either they are dismissed or suspended so they will be exposed to judicial and legal action.
Once an offence is committed, we have a procedure to follow and of course, the prosecution is either to be led by the government or the Federal government as the case may be for civilians, the same thing is applicable to them that’s why call them suspect or accused until they are proven guilty.
What exactly is the police doing to secure the lives of police officers and the electorate as well as all those that will be working with INEC to secure the election?
An election is not a day thing, it’s a process. We have a pre-election period, election period and post-election period and I am sure you know the police has been on top of the game since the beginning of this lectionary process starting from party registration, congresses, primaries and the like and up till now we are still on and doing what we should.
During the attack on the INEC office in Enugu, our men were on duty and unfortunately, we lost one of them and the second one is still seriously injured.
These criminal elements will always want to make attempt to run down the system, attack us and test our capability but we were able to give them a good fight.
Despite the fact that the men on the ground were not large in number like those that came to attack because they are always in large numbers we fought them and that’s why they were able to have direct access to that facility, they just touched the security post and ran away.
We will always put in our effort to make sure we continue to decimate the activities of these elements.
They always want to come out and test our abilities and create fear and panic so it will look like Nigeria is not safe for us to have our election but we are still saying that we are good to go for the 2023 general election and we have done all we should do.
We have done deployment to that effect, we have our operational order and we have incorporated all relevant and concerned security agencies, the military and all the Federal government agencies who are members of ICCES let me repeat again that those security agencies from various state, local government and community are not going to be part of Election security in 2023 election.
