Beyonce has issued a statement to slam English pop band, Right Said Fred, after they claimed that she and her camp never sought permission to sample their hit song.
Just so you know, in an interview with The Sun UK, Fred and Richard Fairbrass a.k.a Right Said Fred called Beyonce ‘arrogant’ for allegedly sampling their 1992 song, ‘I’m Too Sexy’ on her new song, ‘Alien Superstar’ off her ‘Renaissance’ album, without asking or paying them.
The brothers said, “Normally the artiste approaches us, but Beyonce didn’t because she is such an arrogant person. She just had probably thought ‘come and get me’ so we heard about it after the fact when you did.”
They added, “Everyone else, Drake and Taylor Swift, they came to us.
Drizzy took the hook on ‘I’m Too Sexy’ for last year’s ‘Way 2 Sexy,’ while Taylor interpolated the same track on ‘Look What You Made Me Do.’”
They also made it clear that this situation will not turn into a legal matter. Taking to Twitter, their handle tweeted, “We’re delighted Beyonce is using our melody, a simple ‘please’ or ‘may I’ would have been nice.”
Reacting to all of this, Beyonce in a statement pointed out that her track technically does not actually sample theirs, as the duo was quoted as contending, but it is an interpolation in which ‘I’m Too Sexy’ is essentially paraphrased through a re-recording of the elements used.
She added, permission only needed to be sought from the songwriting publisher, not the holders of the original ‘Sexy’ recording, and this permission was asked for and granted.
Beyonce said, “Permission was not only granted for its use, but they publicly spoke of their gratitude for being on the album. For their song, there was no sound recording use, only the composition was utilized. Permission was asked of their publisher on May 11, 2022, and the publisher approved the use on June 15, 2022, and they were even paid for the usage in August, 2022.”
In addition, she said, “Fred and Richard Fairbrass, the brothers who make up Right Said Fred, properly received co-writer credit and were well paid for the use of their song.”
What is surprising is that in the month of July, when Beyonce released her ‘Renaissance’ album, Right Said Fred tweeted, “It’s nice to get a writing credit on the new Beyonce album. ‘Renaissance’ Credits: Drake, A. G. Cook, Syd, Right Said Fred, & More.” #Beyonce
The music duo also tweeted, “Writing credits with Taylor Swift, Drake and now Beyonce, not bad for two blokes that haven’t been play-listed in the UK for over twenty-five years. Beyonce has surprise collaboration with Right Said Fred on new album, Renaissance.”
If you would recall, the Fairbrass brothers aren’t the first to call out Beyonce on her new album. Kelis also accused Beyonce of using her 2003 hit ‘Milkshake’ on the ‘Renaissance’ album as well.
