Exclusive interview: ‘I want to kiss Yeni Kuti’ – Charly Boy

charly boyTVC E. Entertainment maverick, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, known as Charly Boy, was on #YourViewTVC today, where he disclosed he wanted to marry Yeni Kuti but Fela, her father refused. He also attempted to kiss her on stage but she exclaimed saying, ” Ha”.

The entertainer who is now 65 narrated how he suffered in the village.

He explained that at a point he was almost abandoned by his father because of what he believed was okay by him, and that made him to start fending for himself very early.

”My father always forced his opinion on me, but i would not always accept so he disowned me.

 

From America my father sent me to the village and that was where my suffering began, I was practically living on bread and groundnut and that was where and when i started my journey.”

“Many people think that as a son of a former Justice, I did not struggle for myself, but it is not true. The only thing my father gave me was good education.’’

He stressed that “every Nigerian youth can change for the better, by taking responsibility for their lives instead of looking up to government and parents for everything.’’

 

“My advice for every Nigerian youth is to imbibe the ‘Charly Boy philosophy’ of self dependence, because that is the same thing i wish and advise my daughters.”

When asked about the man behind Charly Boy, he said: “Charly Boy is just a cartoon character , the Charly Boy show I had ran for 13 years before I moved to ‘Zoom Time’, and I stopped the programme because my conscience could not allow me  continue to portray the bad politicians as good men and leaders.”

He also cleared the air on his relationship with late songstress, Tina Onwudiwe who died of cancer. He said: ”Tina brought me to Lagos from the village where I was suffering, She saw in me what I did not see in myself, as at then my confidence was low, we were very close but where not married.”

 

The ‘Areafada’, as he is fondly called by young people, recounted his experience as someone who worked independently to attain stardom and relevance and urged the youth to be self-sustaining.

He said, ”My life is that of freedom, I am not a hypocrite and least I forget I don’t take drugs when I am sick, I find it difficult to take pills and generally I do what makes me feel good.”

 

The Nigerian singer/songwriter, television presenter, publisher, producer and one of Nigeria’s most controversial entertainers, best known for his alternative lifestyle, biker style, political views, and television productions is a Buddhist and says he cannot explain why he does most things we see as weird but promised he will continue as it will make him relevant and remain in the minds of people who care and loves him.
