Yul Edochie, a prominent Nollywood actor, has announced the birth of a baby with his second wife, Judy Austin, a Nigerian actress.
In an interview with the Ladies of ‘Your View’, here’s what Alibaba have to say about the situation.
“Monogamy is a detor for Africans understanding, it’s not our story. It wasn’t our story, its like western education, we imbibe it because of the missionaries that came.
“If it were the Arabs that came through the Naija Delta and not the missionaries we probably would have taken on the Arabic culture and if the missionaries had come from Egypt to the North they would have being Christians
“So it is what we got acclimatized to and then we adapted it. It is not African, though we had Africans then who decided that they would have just one wife but that was before Christianity or Islam came to Africa. They decided they would have one wife because they wanted what they can contain.
Polygamy back in the days started because of many reasons.
- The need to do farming (Many hands to help out)
- The need to procreate.
Back then men go to war, and when they go to war they die and in other not to have some women hanging, they marry more.
Polygamy in African setting is a culture and tradition that we detox from to embrace the western setting and its not also bad.
If you go into Christianity proper, it didn’t frown at polygamy.
