Anambra PDP crisis: Supreme Court declines review of verdict

TVC E, POLITICS – The controversy surrounding the Supreme Court judgment on the Anambra leadership tussle of the People’s Democratic Party has now been laid to rest.

The court says it lacks the jurisdiction to review the judgement it delivered on the leadership crisis rocking the Anambra State chapter of the PDP.

Delivering ruling in an application filed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, seeking a review of its January judgement, the apex court held that the judgment did not need to be subjected to a further clarification.

In a unanimous ruling delivered by Justice John Okoro, the Supreme court held that what was brought before it was the issue of leadership in Anambra PDP as at 2012 and not on the implications of elections thereafter.

The apex court further held that the dispute on whether or not the certificate of return should be withdrawn from the serving lawmakers was not an issue before it and that the court never made any pronouncement to that effect.

Justice Okoro added that order 8, rule 16 of the court, expressly states that the court shall not review any judgment, once given, except there is a clerical mistake or slip which in this case, never happened.

Reacting to the verdict, INEC’s counsel said the decision of the court has resolved the confusion generated by parties to suit their purposes.

Counsel to Ejike Oguegebo, the arrowhead of PDP members disputing the court judgement, agrees the ruling has cleared all obstacles.

By the ruling, all PDP federal lawmakers from Anambra state can now heave a sigh of relief and continue to occupy their seats as representatives of their people.
