This may come as a shock to fans of Daniel Craig’s Bond persona, since the breaking of the news of the actor quitting the legendary role of Royal Naval Reserve Commander and MI6 secret agent, James Bond.
Craig, 47, may have signed to play Andreas Wolf, a charismatic German character in the new series, Purity. The show, based on the book by Jonathan Franzen, has prompted frenzied bidding on the part of Amazon, Netflix, FX and Showtime. Craig will reportedly film several 20-episode seasons — work that will no doubt keep him busy.
The producer of Purity, Scott Rudin, also worked with Craig on the movie, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Craig is under contract to do a fifth Bond film but has made it clear that he’s ready to move on.
Craig, who made his film debut as an Afrikaner in The Power of One in 1992, has been Bond for a decade.
His third film in the series, Skyfall, was the first Bond movie to break a billion dollars, but relations between the actor and the franchise has not always been smooth.
In October 2015, Daniel Craig had to be told to stop tongue lashing the Bond brand after he told Time Out magazine, when asked if he’d be back for a fifth Bond movie, “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.”
He did admit in the same Time Out interview that if he did a fifth Bond movie, it would only be for the money.
When Bond and Craig do part ways, prematurely or not, there is no shortage of actors being talked about as possible replacements, including Richard Madden, Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hiddleston, Wolf Hall, Damian Lewis and Idris Elba.
