INEC defends decision to postpone Rivers re-run elections

TVC E, POLITICS – The Rivers state Independent National Electoral Commission, has defended its decision to push forward the re-run legislative election.

The body said it acted within the dictates of the law, in moving the election to March the 19th.

INEC in Rivers State had earlier announced February the 6th as date for the legislative re-run election.

Elections are expected to hold in all 3 senatorial seats in the state, 12 out of the 13 House of Representative seats and 22 out of 32 state assembly seats.

Despite controversies trailing the use of the electronic card readers in previous elections in Nigeria, INEC says next month’s rerun election in Rivers State will hold with the full complement of the devices.

At the meeting, leaders of some of the 28 political parties to participate in the poll took turns to pledge their commitment towards a smooth conduct of the exercise.
