Nigerian singer Victony, born Anthony Ebuka Victor, has opened up about how his life-altering 2021 car accident transformed his parents’ attitude toward his music career.
Speaking on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the “Soweto” crooner revealed that his parents were initially hesitant about his pursuit of music, hoping instead that he would follow a more traditional path and become an engineer.
“They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive… They hoped I’d finish school and become an engineer,” he shared.
However, everything changed after the devastating crash, which claimed one life and left three others injured. The overwhelming public support and emotional outpouring Victony received after the accident made his parents recognize the impact and importance of his music.
“They saw how much people cared, how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony’ — and they just let me do what I wanted,” he said.
The singer also opened up about the personal aftermath of the accident — including undergoing four surgeries — and how it led him to a journey of self-reflection. He disclosed that he’s quit smoking weed, is cutting back on alcohol, and is trying to perform sober to better connect with fans.
“Keeping fit is a new habit… I want to see my fans with my eyes and connect with them. I believe I can do it — and perform better than I did when I was drinking.”
Victony’s story is not just one of survival, but of growth, transformation, and a renewed focus on purpose and wellness.
