Embattled R&B singer R. Kelly was reportedly hospitalized after suffering a near-fatal overdose at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina. According to his legal team, the incident occurred while Kelly was in solitary confinement and had already taken his prescribed anxiety medication. Prison staff allegedly administered an additional dose, leading to his collapse on June 13, with symptoms including dizziness, vision loss, and unconsciousness.
His attorney, Beau Brindley, claims that the overdose was intentional, pointing to a larger plot involving prison staff and an Aryan Brotherhood inmate, who allegedly refused to carry out a plan to harm Kelly and later revealed the conspiracy.
Doctors found dangerous blood clots in Kelly’s legs and lungs during his hospital stay, but he was discharged against medical advice and returned to solitary confinement without proper treatment.
Brindley has now filed an emergency motion for his release, citing cruel and unusual punishment and demanding home confinement for safety reasons. Federal prosecutors, however, have rejected the claims as “fanciful” and “manipulative.” A court hearing is scheduled for June 20.
Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering, along with an additional 20-year sentence for child pornography charges.
