Fela Kuti Makes History: “Zombie” Inducted into 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame

In a groundbreaking achievement, Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has been posthumously honored as his iconic 1976 album “Zombie” has been inducted into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame. This milestone marks the first Nigerian album to receive this prestigious recognition.

The Hall of Fame distinguishes itself from other Grammy categories by acknowledging works with “lasting qualitative or historical significance” that have persisted.

A Timeless Classic

The Recording Academy praised “Zombie” for its “fearless critique of oppression, cultural impact, and enduring relevance to political resistance and African musical heritage.” Released in Nigeria in 1976 and later in the UK in 1977, “Zombie” is a scathing satire that compares Nigerian soldiers to brainwashed “zombies” who blindly obey orders. The album’s powerful commentary struck a national nerve, sparking widespread popularity and ire from the ruling military regime.

A Legacy of Resistance

The album’s impact was met with brutal force, as Fela’s Lagos commune, the Kalakuta Republic, was raided in 1977, resulting in Fela’s beating, studio destruction, and loss of master tapes. His mother, prominent activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, tragically lost her life due to injuries sustained during the attack. Despite this, Fela’s legacy as a fearless voice against oppression only grew stronger.

A Family’s Pride

Reacting to the news, Femi Kuti, Fela’s eldest son and Afrobeat musician, shared the family’s pride on social media: “Our father’s legacy lives on. We are honored to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. His music continues to inspire & unite people across the world #Grammy.”

A Place in History

“Zombie” now joins an esteemed group of historic recordings in the Grammy Hall of Fame, alongside legends like Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Santana, and Cat Stevens. This recognition cements Fela Kuti’s status as a musical icon and a champion of human rights, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
