Legendary Nigerian comedian Alibaba has taken a firm stand against what he calls a decline in professionalism among some Nigerian comedians. In a recent Outside The Box podcast episode, Alibaba recounted how certain comedians he once trusted to represent him at corporate events ended up embarrassing themselves — and him — with tasteless and offensive jokes.
He shared a specific incident where a comedian made an insensitive joke about a chairman’s plus-size wife, suggesting she was too heavy to be carried in a race. Alibaba expressed disappointment at the comedian’s lack of remorse, stating, “He even claimed I confronted him out of envy.”
While he refused to name names, Alibaba emphasized that humor should be intelligent, not insulting. He called on comedians to respect boundaries, especially at formal events, and to stop undermining the credibility of the comedy industry with vulgar material.
His comments have sparked renewed discussions about the evolving standards in stand-up comedy and the importance of audience awareness and decorum.
