Afrobeats superstar Davido has addressed his past friendship with convicted internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka Hushpuppi. In a recent podcast interview, Davido clarified that while they were acquaintances, he had no knowledge of Hushpuppi’s criminal activities.
The singer expressed his sympathy and wished Hushpuppi well, saying, “My prayers go out to him. He was my friend. I just saw him around, I never really knew what he was doing.” Davido also pointed to the economic hardship in Nigeria as a factor behind the rise in fraud, suggesting that some people choose to “ball for a few years” despite the consequences.
Hushpuppi is currently serving an 11-year sentence in a U.S. prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. He was arrested in Dubai in 2020 and ordered to pay over $1.7 million in restitution to his victims.
