Taylor Swift’s Vienna Shows Cancelled Due to Security Issues

Austrian authorities have arrested two suspects connected to a foiled plot to attack Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna.

The suspects, reportedly inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, were found with bomb-making materials. One suspect confessed to planning to “kill as many people as possible” outside the concert venue.

Concerts Canceled, Fans Disappointed

Due to the plot, three sold-out concerts were canceled on Wednesday, disappointing fans worldwide who had traveled to attend the Eras Tour at Ernst Happel Stadium. The cancellation left the stadium empty on Thursday morning, where organizers had expected up to 65,000 fans inside for each show, with an additional 30,000 outside—where the suspects allegedly intended to strike.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer defended the decision to cancel the concerts, emphasizing that safety is the top priority. “I understand very well that those who wanted to experience the concert live are very sad,” Nehammer said at a news conference. Despite this, Swift is still scheduled to perform five concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium in mid-August.

The main suspect, who began planning the attack in July, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State leader online. Investigators described him as “clearly radicalized,” with plans to use knives or explosives. A raid on his home in Ternitz revealed chemical substances and devices prepared for an attack. The second suspect, a 17-year-old, was also found to have engaged with extremist material but has remained silent during interrogations.

Ongoing Investigation

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday, and authorities continue to monitor the situation. A third individual, a 15-year-old who communicated with the suspects, was questioned but not charged. Austrian intelligence collaborated closely with foreign agencies to thwart the plot, though details of international involvement remain undisclosed. Concert organizer Barracuda Music and Austrian rail operator OeBB have announced refunds for tickets and travel costs related to the canceled events.

As the investigation unfolds, Austrian authorities remain committed to ensuring public safety at large gatherings.
