Irish motorcyclist Louis O’Regan tragically passed away after a crash during the qualifying session for the Manx Grand Prix over the weekend.
The event is set to resume on Monday night in the Isle of Man. Race organizers expressed their heartfelt condolences to O’Regan’s family and friends in a statement.
The qualifying session was halted due to a red flag incident that occurred at Kate’s Cottage, about 30 miles into the 37-mile race. The organizers confirmed, “With great sadness, we can confirm that Louis O’Regan, 43, has died from injuries sustained in an accident at Kate’s Cottage during the opening qualifying session of the 2024 event.”
O’Regan, who lived in Didcot, England, was an experienced competitor at the Manx Grand Prix, having made his debut in the 2013 Newcomers A Race, where he finished 12th. He recorded his personal best lap speed during the 2019 Junior Race, averaging 114.7 mph. The organizers extended their condolences to his partner Sarah, family, and friends.
The previous year’s Grand Prix was also marred by tragedy when 69-year-old Iain Bainbridge died during a qualifying session. Bainbridge had been a regular competitor since his debut in 2005.
It is with great sadness that we can confirm the loss of Louis O’Regan following an incident in today’s qualifying session.
