Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has signed with Italian club Fiorentina on a free transfer, ending his tenure at Old Trafford after 12 years.
De Gea left United last summer after failing to negotiate a contract extension, marking the end of an era that saw him set club records and earn multiple accolades.
Fans had mixed reactions to De Gea’s departure. Some wanted him to stay, while others felt it was time for the club to move on due to concerns about his distribution and ability to play from the back. After leaving United, De Gea attracted interest from Saudi Arabian clubs but chose to remain in Europe, staying a free agent throughout the 2023/24 season. During this period, he trained at Moss Lane, home of non-league Altrincham, while waiting for a new opportunity.

De Gea has now joined Fiorentina on a one-year contract, with an option for an additional year. He completed his medical on Friday and will be unveiled as a Fiorentina player just before the Serie A season begins. Fiorentina finished eighth in Italy’s top division last season and suffered defeat in the Conference League final for the second consecutive year.
Meanwhile, former United loanee Sofyan Amrabat remains with Fiorentina. Amrabat had attempted to force a move to United by delaying his return to pre-season training but has since rejoined the squad. United, in need of a midfielder before the transfer window closes on August 30, was expected to discuss Amrabat’s potential transfer among its leadership last month.
De Gea’s Legacy at Manchester United
There were speculations that De Gea might retire after not securing a new club last season, but Fiorentina has provided him with a fresh opportunity to continue his career. During his time at Manchester United, De Gea won the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Europa League. He was named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year four times and holds the club record for the most appearances by a goalkeeper, with 545 matches played and 190 clean sheets. Talks of a testimonial at Old Trafford are expected when he eventually retires.
